Zirconia crowns, made in Manhattan.

Short answer: prescribe multilayer zirconia as a universal crown when you need strength and aesthetics, and full-contour zirconia for posterior teeth or minimal occlusal clearance. Both are CAD/CAM milled by our Midtown lab.

How should you prep for zirconia?

Monolithic and multilayer zirconia, including Zerapure™. Give the material its minimum thickness, keep every edge rounded and finish on a clear chamfer or rounded shoulder.

Where sources differ

  • Minimums depend on the disc. High-strength (3Y) monolithic brands allow as little as 0.5 mm occlusal where space is limited; translucent (4Y/5Y) and multilayer zirconia needs 0.8 mm anterior and 1.0 mm posterior or more.
  • Feather or knife-edge margins are accepted by some high-strength monolithic brands, “with caution” by others, and discouraged for translucent zirconia.
  • Taper: about 4–8° is the most common recommendation; one maker allows 5–15°.

Zirconia FAQ

Questions dentists ask about zirconia crowns.

What is the difference between multilayer and full-contour zirconia?
Multilayer zirconia combines the strength of full-contour zirconia with the cosmetic result of layered porcelain in one solid disc. It is our #1 suggested universal restoration. Full-contour (monolithic) zirconia is milled from a single block of bio-compatible zirconia and is ideal for posterior restorations, including patients with minimal occlusal clearance.
Which cement do you suggest for zirconia crowns?
For multilayer zirconia we suggest Ivoclar Vivadent Multilink. For full-contour zirconia we suggest a resin-based cement or a non-expanding glass ionomer.
When should I prescribe e.max instead of zirconia?
IPS e.max (lithium disilicate) offers the utmost translucency, so it is a perfect option for anterior restorations where aesthetic concerns are paramount. Talk to us about your case planning.
How long does a zirconia crown take?
Typically 4–5 lab days; complex cases need longer. Same-day or next-day turnaround is available for crowns.
Can I send a digital scan for zirconia crowns?
Yes. Our full-contour zirconia is fabricated digitally with CAD/CAM. We accept scans from iTero, 3Shape, Medit, Shining 3D, Straumann AXS, Dexis, DS Core and more. Our iTero Lab ID is 4364; other systems can link to us via info@adlny.com. See Send a Case.
